CBT 1
Negative marking: There shall be negative marking and marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer @ 1/3 of the marks allotted for each question

- 90 minutes; 120 minutes for candidates who are eligible for use of a Scribe
- Sections Note:
- The CEN states the section wise distribution is only indicative and there may be some variations in the actual question papers.
- Qualifying Nature:
- The 1st stage CBT is of screening nature; the normalized score of 1st stage exam shall be used only for short listing of candidates for 2nd stage exam as per their merit.
- Marks Per Question Note:
- The CEN does not state a marks-per-question value; it publishes only total questions (100), total marks (100), per-section marks, and the 1/3 negative-marking rule.

- Virtual calculator will be made available on the Computer Monitor during 2nd Stage CBT.
- Duration Note:
- 120 minutes; 160 minutes for candidates who are eligible for use of a Scribe
- Sections Note:
- The CEN states the section wise distribution is only indicative and there may be some variations in the actual question papers.
- Shortlisting For CBT 2:
- Based on normalized marks in 1st Stage CBT; total candidates shortlisted shall be 15 times the community wise total vacancy of posts notified against the RRB, with Railways reserving the right to increase/decrease this limit.
- Marks Per Question Note:
- The CEN does not state a marks-per-question value for CBT-II either.
- Technical Abilities Note:
- The CEN does not publish any further split of the 100 Technical Abilities questions; it only says questions are framed from the syllabus defined for the various Exam Groups given at Annexure VIII-(A), (B), (C) & (D), per the Discipline Mapping Table at Para 13.3.

Selection process
- 11st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-I)Common for all notified posts of this CEN. 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes (120 minutes with Scribe). Screening nature only: the normalized score is used only for shortlisting candidates for the 2nd stage exam as per their merit. Community-wise minimum qualifying percentages apply (UR 40%, EWS 40%, OBC-NCL 30%, SC 30%, ST 25%).
- 22nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-II)Shortlisting based on normalized marks in CBT-I at 15 times the community wise total vacancy notified against the RRB. 150 questions, 150 marks, 120 minutes (160 minutes with Scribe). Virtual calculator provided. Same community-wise minimum qualifying percentages apply.
- 3Document Verification (DV)Shortlisting for DV is based on marks and merit in the 2nd Stage CBT (normalized marks) and options; the number of shortlisted candidates will be equal to the number of vacancies (RRB-wise at the rate of 1:1 of the vacancies). Candidates must produce original certificates; no additional time is given and candidature of those not producing originals on the date of verification is liable to be forfeited.
- 4Medical Examination (ME)Candidates called for DV have to pass requisite medical fitness test(s) conducted by the Railway Administration/RRB for the post(s) opted. Appointment is subject to passing the requisite Medical Fitness Test, final verification of educational and community certificates and verification of antecedents/character. A candidate failing to acquire the required medical standard may be offered one last and final opportunity to prefer a Medical Appeal on payment of prescribed charges.
- 5Empanelment and zone allotmentEmpanelment is based on merit and subject to successful completion of document verification and passing the prescribed medical examination; on completion of all stages RRB allots Railway zone/Production unit as per the option of eligible candidates, subject to merit, medical standard and vacancy position.
Merit kaise banti hai: CBT-1 is of screening nature and its normalized score is used only to shortlist for CBT-2. Final merit rests on the 2nd Stage CBT. A Merit Index is computed to build a common merit list across Exam Groups: Merit Index = Sq + (St - Sq) x (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq), where M is the candidate's marks (actual/raw for single session, normalized for multi-session), Mq is the qualifying marks for a general category candidate in the paper (40), Mt is the mean marks of the top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of candidates who appeared in the paper, Sq = 350 is the score assigned to Mq, and St = 900 is the score assigned to Mt. The combined merit list is prepared in descending order of merit and preference allotment is done on that basis.
