A US penny dropped from the Empire State Building's 86th floor in still air reached the ground at roughly 40 km/h, far below the roughly 200 km/h needed to crack a human skull. The reason is air resistance: a flat coin presents a large surface for its mass, so it quickly reaches a speed where drag balances gravity. Real injuries from dropped objects almost always involve something heavier and denser, like a bolt, a tool, or a steel ball. The 1907 paper by a Syracuse University student that started the panic used a calculation that ignored drag, and was later corrected by a professor. The bottom line: keep windows closed in tall buildings during storms for other reasons, but coins are not projectiles.
