The Sun's surface, the photosphere, sits at about 5,778 K and radiates across the visible spectrum. Peak emission is in the green-yellow band, but there is enough blue and red either side to make the combined light look white to the eye. Astronauts on the ISS consistently describe the Sun as pure white. From the ground, the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered out by air molecules, leaving a yellow or orange disc and the blue sky we associate with daytime. At sunrise and sunset the path through the atmosphere is longer, scattering more blue and green, which is why the Sun looks red on the horizon. NASA's SOHO and SDO spacecraft carry instruments that measure the Sun's spectrum directly, and the resulting plots show a smooth blackbody curve with no dominant colour.
