The claim has been repeated since at least the 1970s, but astronauts keep debunking it. Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, on China's first crewed mission Shenzhou 5 in October 2003, said he could not see the Wall from orbit. From the International Space Station, which circles Earth at about 408 km, the Wall is hard to pick out even with a camera because its grey stones blend with the surrounding terrain. From the Moon, 3,84,400 km away, Earth itself appears only as a small blue-white ball, and no human structure is resolvable. NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield has called the claim a myth. What you can spot from orbit without help: large cities at night, the Pyramids of Giza on clear days, and major airports. The Great Wall, despite being 21,196 km long, is too narrow and too well camouflaged against the land.
