No. India has two official languages at the central level, Hindi and English, and 22 scheduled languages. No language is designated as 'national' in the Constitution. Hindi is the official language of the central government, used alongside English.
Poora jawab
In English
The Constitution of India, in Article 343, names Hindi in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union, with English to be used for the first 15 years after the Constitution came into force in 1950. The 1963 Official Languages Act made English a permanent co-official language, so both are now official. The Eighth Schedule lists 22 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, and others. None of them is called a national language. The question comes up because Hindi is the most spoken first language in India, used as a mother tongue by about 43 percent of the population in the 2011 Census, and is used widely in the central government. The resistance from southern states, where non-Hindi speakers raised fears of cultural domination, led to the three-language formula and a guarantee that English would be retained. The 2024 debate on Hindi in schools and Parliament shows the question is still very much alive.
