Lightning goes for the easiest path between cloud and ground, so a tall, sharp, conductive object gets hit again and again. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, is a textbook case: its 443-metre spire funnels strikes so often that it has been used as a research site by the likes of meteorologist Joe Friday and the New York Power & Light team. The Sears Willis Tower in Chicago, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and isolated trees on a hill get the same treatment. The phrase 'never twice' is at least as old as the 19th century and was probably meant as comfort after a close call, not as a physics statement. NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory measures strikes directly and has recorded multiple events within seconds on the same structure.
