Do ostriches bury their heads in the sand?
No. Ostriches lower their heads to turn eggs in the nest, and from a distance the pale neck can look like a head in the sand. The myth goes back to Pliny the Elder in 77 CE.
Poora jawab
In English
Pliny the Elder wrote in his Natural History that ostriches stick their heads into bushes and think they are hidden, calling them 'the height of stupidity'. The story was wrong then and is wrong now. The actual behaviour is a mix of three things. First, ostriches dig shallow nests in the ground and turn their 1.5 kg eggs, which involves lowering the head for several minutes at a time. Second, ostriches sometimes lie flat on the ground with their necks stretched out to look like a low mound when threatened; this is called 'flushing'. Third, ostriches, like many birds, sometimes put their heads in holes to search for food, grit, or water. None of these involve burying the head to hide. The San Diego Zoo and Smithsonian's National Zoo have published detailed descriptions of the behaviour. The myth survives in cartoons and metaphors for cowardice, neither of which describes the world's largest living bird.
