In the peak year, food runs short and a large fraction of the population sets off in search of a new home, sometimes in a rush across snow or water. The 1958 Disney film White Wilderness, set in Alberta, Canada, claimed to show the migration. The producers, working from a scripted plan and not from observed behaviour, bought lemmings from Inuit children, brought them to a snow-covered cliff, and herded them off the edge. The footage was dramatic and lodged in popular culture. The truth came out in a 1982 investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which interviewed residents of the filming area and walked the actual landscape. Lemmings do sometimes drown in water crossings, but there is no evidence of deliberate self-destruction. The myth gave the English language the expression 'lemming-like' to describe mindless conformity, which is unfair to a small rodent.
