Do humans have exactly five senses?

Chhota jawab

No. The five-sense list goes back to Aristotle but misses most of what we actually sense. Balance, temperature, pain, body position, time and more are separate senses, and the full count is at least nine by any honest accounting.

Poora jawab

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders

In English

Aristotle's list in De Anima, written around 350 BCE, included sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, and that is what most school textbooks still print. Modern sensory biology counts at least nine, and the boundary cases push the total higher. The additional senses include equilibrioception, the vestibular system in the inner ear that tells you which way is up; proprioception, the sense of where your limbs are without looking; thermoception, the sense of temperature; nociception, the sense of pain; chronoception, the sense of time passing; and interoception, the sense of what is happening inside the body, including hunger, thirst, and the urge to urinate. The NIH's National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders treats balance as a separate sense on its own. The five-senses model is not wrong exactly, but it is far from complete.

Ek aur baat
