Myth vs Reality2 min readmedium

Do carrots improve your night vision?

Chhota jawab

No, not directly. The myth was British propaganda in World War II to hide the fact that RAF pilots were using radar. Carrots contain vitamin A, which keeps eyes healthy, but they do not give you super vision.

Poora jawab

In English

Vitamin A, which the body makes from beta-carotene in carrots, is essential for rhodopsin, the pigment in the retina's rod cells that detects low light. A deficiency in vitamin A, common in poor parts of South Asia and Africa, does cause night blindness. Eating extra carrots on top of an already adequate diet does not improve vision further. The myth took off in 1940. The British Ministry of Information, desperate to explain how RAF pilots were picking off German bombers at night without being seen, planted stories in newspapers claiming that the pilots' exceptional eyesight came from a steady diet of carrots. The real reason was the new Airborne Interception Radar and the on-board 3.7 cm wavelength radar that could pick out enemy planes in the dark. The lie worked so well that the British public started eating more carrots, and a generation grew up believing it. The Lancet reviewed the issue in 1998 and the answer is firmly in the 'no extra benefit' column.

Ek aur baat
