Myth vs Reality2 min readmedium

Do camels store water in their humps?

Chhota jawab

No, the hump stores fat, not water. The myth comes from the camel's ability to go for days without drinking, which is a different trick: their red blood cells are oval, not round, and can keep flowing when dehydrated.

Poora jawab

In English

A camel's hump, in the dromedary, is a single mound on the back; in the Bactrian, two mounds. Inside, the hump is mostly fat, up to 36 kg in a healthy adult, used as an energy reserve for desert crossings where food is sparse. The fat can be metabolised into water: 1 g of fat yields about 1.1 g of water when oxidised, which is how the camel survives the gap between waterholes. A separate set of tricks handles the water itself. A camel can drink up to 100 litres in 10 minutes when it finds water, filling its bloodstream, its stomach, and the cells of its gut. Its red blood cells are oval rather than round, which lets them keep flowing in concentrated blood, and its kidneys are tight enough to produce urine that is 5 times as concentrated as a human's, so it loses very little water. The myth was probably the work of travellers in the 19th century trying to make sense of what they saw in deserts.

Ek aur baat
