Bulls and cattle in general have two types of cone cells in their eyes, sensitive to blue and green-yellow. They cannot distinguish red from green, and red appears as a dark grey to them. The bullring tradition of the red cape, called a muleta, dates to 1726, when the Spanish matador Francisco Romero began using a small red cape to draw the bull's attention away from the larger cape used in earlier bouts. The colour was not the point: the cloth was small enough to control, and red was the colour available to flag-makers. Modern demonstrations with a moving white sheet produce the same charge. The 2007 documentary The Science of the Bull by the Discovery Channel showed identical reactions to red, white, blue, and yellow cloths as long as the movement pattern was held constant. The bull charges because of the threat display and the motion, not the colour. The red also has a practical function for the audience: it hides blood from minor cape goring.
