Hundreds of Viking graves have been excavated across Scandinavia, the British Isles, Iceland, and Greenland, and only a handful of complete helmets have survived. The most famous are the Gjermundbu helmet from Norway, dated to around 970 CE, and the Tjele helmet fragment from Denmark. None has horns. The helmets were typically a rounded iron cap with a guard over the nose and a chainmail aventail hanging down to protect the neck and shoulders. The horned helmet was invented for the stage. The 1876 production of Wagner's Ring Cycle at Bayreuth, designed by Carl Emil Doepler, gave the Vikings horned helmets. The image stuck. By the 20th century it had been adopted in every cartoon, comic, and Halloween costume in the West. Real Viking gear was functional: leather, wool, iron, and a round wooden shield covered in leather. The horned look would have been a serious problem in close combat, with horns catching on the wooden shields of the enemy.
