Einstein's biographers agree on his school record. In 1895, at 16, he took the entrance exam for the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich, a year early, and failed only because he was too young. He had perfect marks in mathematics and physics. He retook the exam a year later and was admitted, again with top marks in maths and physics. The 'failed mathematics' myth is probably a story told to encourage struggling students, and it has been repeated for over a century. The truth is the opposite. Einstein was so advanced in mathematics that he sometimes sat in on university lectures while still in secondary school. He did have issues with French and other humanities, and he failed his first attempt at the polytechnic entrance exam because of his age, not his knowledge. He eventually taught himself, and later, his PhD work in 1905 on the photoelectric effect contained so much advanced mathematics that it took a year for the field to fully absorb it. The 'Einstein the dunce' story is a comforting myth with no basis.
