There are three animals people call 'daddy longlegs', and the confusion is at the heart of the myth. The harvestman, of the order Opiliones, has long, thin legs and a single oval body. It is an arachnid but not a spider. It has no silk glands, no venom, and no fangs. It eats decomposing matter and small insects. The cellar spider, family Pholcidae, is a true spider with venom that paralyses its prey, including other spiders. Its venom is not medically significant to humans. The crane fly, family Tipulidae, is a flying insect, not even an arachnid. The original 'most venomous but can't bite you' claim is probably a confusion between the harvestman, which has no venom, and the cellar spider, which has mild venom. The cellar spider's fangs are too small to penetrate human skin in most cases. A 2004 episode of MythBusters tested the cellar spider and found that even when it did bite, the effect was no worse than a mosquito bite.
