Ye sirf bahar lagane ke liye hai. Hing bachche ko khilani nahi hai, aur hing ka paani ya ghutti pilana bhi nahi hai — chahe ghar me ye aadat kitni bhi purani ho. Bachcha kam se kam ek mahine ka ho aur naabhi ki dori sookh kar gir chuki ho, isse pehle wahan kuch bhi na lagayein. This is for the outside of the skin only. Asafoetida is not fed to the baby, and neither is hing water or any ghutti — however old the household habit is. The baby must be at least a month old and the umbilical stump must have dried and fallen off; until then, put nothing there at all. Stir a small pinch of asafoetida into a teaspoon of boiled water and test it on your own hand — it should be lukewarm, never hot. Smear this thin paste in a circle around the navel with a very light hand, not into the navel itself. Wipe it off completely with a damp cloth after 20 to 30 minutes; never leave it on overnight. Not more than once a day. Before the first use, dab a little near the elbow and watch for 15 minutes for redness or bumps. If the baby's lips, tongue or nail beds turn blue or grey, or the breathing speeds up, wipe the paste off and go to hospital straight away. If the crying runs past three hours or the baby seems unlike themselves, see a doctor — illness has to be ruled out before anything is called colic.

Daawa ye hai ki naabhi ke aas-paas lagane se andar ki gas nikal jaati hai aur bachche ka rona kam ho jaata hai. Bangal me shishu ko hing ka paani pilane ka riwaaj bhi hai aur Dilli me ajwain ki potli sekne ka — par shishu ko hing khilane wala hissa is nuskhe me nahi hai aur na hona chahiye. Ye sab parampara ke daawe hain, kisi jaanch se nikle nateeje nahi.

Ayurveda and everyday household habit regard asafoetida as a wind-relieving spice. The claim is that smearing it around the navel lets trapped gas out and settles the crying. Bengal also has the habit of feeding babies hing water, and Delhi its warm carom-seed pouch — but the feeding half of that tradition is not part of this and should not be. These are inherited claims, not the result of any test.

Hume hing ka colic par koi human clinical trial nahi mila. Systematic Reviews (2019) me chhapi Perry aur saathiyon ki samiksha ne colic ke 16 systematic reviews ko ek saath dekha — usme hing ya naabhi par kuch lagane ka zikr tak nahi hai. Jispar kaam hua hai woh hain probiotic, reedh ki manipulation, saunf ka ark aur cheeni ka ghol — aur un samikshaon me se zyadatar ki quality AMSTAR-2 par 'critically low' aayi, sirf ek Cochrane samiksha isse alag thi. NHS saaf likhta hai ki colic ki drops, herbal aur probiotic cheezein salah me nahi hain aur unke faayde ka koi saboot nahi hai. Yaani ye praktha purani hai, jaanchi nahi gayi — isliye ise doctor ko dikhane ki jagah par nahi rakha ja sakta.

We found no human clinical trial of asafoetida for colic. A 2019 overview by Perry and colleagues in Systematic Reviews pooled 16 systematic reviews of colic therapies; asafoetida and navel applications do not appear in it at all. What has been studied is probiotics, spinal manipulation, fennel extract and sugar solutions — and most of those reviews were rated critically low confidence on AMSTAR-2, with a single Cochrane review the exception. The NHS states plainly that colic drops, herbal and probiotic supplements are not recommended and there is no evidence they help. So this practice is old and untested, and it cannot stand in place of having the baby seen.
